We provide binders with all the local area brochures in our accommodations.
NORTHWEST
Carroll County, to the northwest of Coon Rapids, has good soils and boundless agriculture. Many inhabitants are of German Catholic stock. The farms are meticulously kept and many communities in the county feature beautiful Catholic churches with Gothic and Romanesque architecture. Carroll, the county seat (25 miles from Coon Rapids), is a major hub of western Iowa, complete with movies, big chain stores, boutique shops and restaurants. Check out the Carroll County Historical Museum and nearby Swan Lake Park, which offers an enclosed fishing house, boat and bike rentals, wildlife exhibits and a petting zoo. The German Haus Barn in Manning is another nearby attraction.
SOUTHWEST
Audubon County, to the southwest, is rolling, intensively farmed land. The Mississippi/Missouri Divide cuts through the county just a few miles west of the River House. The use of terraces, grass waterways and minimum tillage techniques is important on this land. On your way southwest, check out the Heritage Rose Garden in Gray. Albert the Bull, a concrete, anatomically correct 30 foot structure in Audubon, is billed as the Worlds Largest Bull. Hamlin Park, just south of Audubon features antique farm machinery, a one room school house and restored windmills. Further south, stop in Plow in the Tree Park. Audubon County has several nice antique stores. The Danish Windmill and Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Horn are fun and interesting stops on your way to or from Omaha.
NORTHEAST
Dunbar Slough Wildlife Management Area is located on the Greene/Carroll county line road N58, several miles north, and slightly east of Coon Rapids. The Slough offers excellent bird-watching. Resort guests can have access to our nearby, privately owned wetland, the Terrell farm. Access is available by reservation only to resort guests.Greene County to the northeast is flat, with some of the best black soils in the world. Visit the Mahanay Bell Tower in Jefferson, for a 30-mile panoramic view of the Iowa landscape, and drive original segments of the Lincoln Highway, complete with its Burma Shave signs.
SOUTHEAST
Guthrie County, in which the Resort lays, offers several beautiful parks and nature areas. Springbrook State Park, 16 miles from Coon Rapids, is especially nice with a good lake for swimming. The county is rough, with more bridges per capita than any other county in the United States. Check out the lovely scenic drive on Highway 44.
Dallas County , Perry offers the Forest Park Museum, the Home Town Perry Museum, an excellent tearoom, and nice gift shops.
Adair offers the Henry A. Wallace Country Life Center near Greenfield, with interactive exhibits on agriculture and Henry A. Wallaces life.
Madison County, with its famous covered bridges, lies 70 miles southeast of Coon Rapids.
The Des Moines area, 70 miles southeast of Coon Rapids, features all the amenities of a big city and lots of attractions. One of our favorites is Living History Farm.
