Whiterock Bird List
This is an open invitation to birdwatchers to come and bird at a new 5,000 acre nature preserve in west-central Iowa.Whiterock will dedicate most of 2005 to long-range planning, but for that planning, needs immediate baseline studies of the local ecology. In particular, we are interested in starting to get a grasp on bird species (both migratory and breeding) because of their importance as indicators of environmental and habitat quality.
For this reason we are issuing an immediate call to all Iowan birders, to please come and bird watch on the preserve and to let us know what you find. You can come any day (except Dec 1st to 7th) park at one of the spots marked on the Whiterock trail map and walk through the preserve.
There will be deer, turkey, and pheasant hunters on the preserve in April, October, November, December, and January. During all those months you must wear orange! During those months, at times we will also be restricting access to parts of the preserve where we know there are hunters; please check the map linked to this page to see which areas will be restricted on what dates. Because there are cattle grazing on some parts of the preserve, you must close all gates. For your safety we advise you not to approach any cows with calves. Please also study the linked map to ensure that you do not inadvertently enter neighbor’s property, and of course we expect you to follow general birding etiquette.
Please send us back a copy of the map indicating the areas visited, the date of your visit and the species you saw or heard. If you are the first to identify a bird in Whiterock, you will receive credit on the linked bird list. Reporting your findings via the Iowa Nature Mapping system would also be extremely helpful.
Please mail an annotated map and/or Iowa Bird Checklist to Kay Neumann, Volunteer Coordinator for Bird Survey, 25494 320th St., Dedham, Iowa 50066. Telephone 712-683-5555.
Long Term Bird Study
If you are an experienced birdwatcher and would be willing to assist with a more systematic parallel effort (to report birds seen within 50 meters of a series of designated random observation points, during specific time periods in April, May and June), please contact volunteer Birding Coordinator Kay Neumann. She can train you in the protocol and explain how to find the specific observation points. (A GPS unit will be helpful, but not essential.) The project design has been developed by Dr. Bill Clark at Iowa State University.Thank you so much for your assistances in either or both of these efforts. And happy birding!
Sincerely,
Kay Neuman
